Christmas and New Year in Torrox Costa: what to expect and how to plan
Planning Christmas or New Year in Torrox Costa? Spanish holiday dates, shop and restaurant closures, local events to check and practical tips.

Christmas and New Year on the Costa del Sol feel different from a northern European winter: no snow, usually plenty of daylight for walking, and a Spanish holiday calendar that shapes what is open. This guide explains the dates that matter, how shops and restaurants tend to behave and what to check locally before you book. For the wider picture of a cooler-season stay, see our winter guide.
The Spanish holiday calendar
The key days are Nochebuena (24 December, the main family dinner), Christmas Day (25 December), Nochevieja (31 December) and New Year's Day. Epiphany follows on 6 January, and the evening before, 5 January, is when many Spanish towns hold a Three Kings parade (Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos). Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Epiphany are public holidays across Spain. Many locals traditionally eat twelve grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve, one for each chime.
Towns along the coast usually put up festive lights and a nativity scene, but dates, times and programmes change every year. We do not list a fixed programme: check the Torrox town hall (Ayuntamiento) website or social media close to your trip.
Shops and groceries
Plan your shopping before the holiday days. On public holidays many shops and supermarkets close or open for short hours, and the days around 24 and 31 December often have early closing. Buy basics on the 23rd or 30th rather than relying on a last-minute trip. Our markets guide covers the weekly market days, but confirm that a market runs in the holiday week.
Eating out
Restaurants may serve special set menus on Nochebuena and Nochevieja, or close for family celebrations, and some places take a winter break. Reserve ahead for the evenings of 24, 25 and 31 December, and ask what the menu includes before you commit. Browse our food guide for ideas, then phone or visit to confirm opening times. Opening hours change, so never assume the summer pattern applies.
Weather and what to do
Daytime weather can be mild, but it can also be cool, windy or wet, and evenings feel cold, especially after sunset. Check the AEMET forecast shortly before you travel and pack layers. Good low-effort days include a seafront walk, lunch out and a visit to Torrox Pueblo. Keep our rainy-day guide handy for changeable weather.
Getting here and moving around
Flights, trains and buses can run reduced timetables on the holiday days. Read how to get from Málaga airport to Torrox Costa and check the return journey in advance, particularly if you travel on 25 December, 1 January or 6 January.
Where to stay
Sea Breeze is our one-bedroom beachfront apartment at Panorama Beach, with space for up to four guests and a sea-view terrace. Its shared pool is seasonal, so do not plan on swimming at Christmas; the pool's availability is not guaranteed.
